Reflection: My First Year in the Dutch Market (and what I’ve learned since)
The "Expats’ Imposter Syndrome" As I look back at my early days in the Netherlands, I remember a very specific feeling in 2017: the fear that I wouldn’t be "smart enough" or "competitive enough" to thrive in a first-world economy. Coming from Brazil, I had this misguided idea that European professionals were on an unreachable level. I’ll admit it now: I was wrong.

The Brazilian Edge: What I quickly discovered, and what I now coach my clients to embrace, is that coming from a high-pressure market like Brazil gives us a unique "hunger." In Brazil, if you aren’t excellent, you’re out. This translates into a level of resilience, flexibility, and dedication that is highly valued in the Dutch ecosystem.
I landed my first role here not just with a CV, but by shaking the director’s hand and showing the proactive ambition that defines our culture. We don't just wait for opportunities; we create them.
Cultural Nuances: Directness vs. Connection One of my biggest learning curves was the famous Dutch directness. I realized we often take too long to get to the point. Over the years, I’ve mastered the balance between the warm, communicative Brazilian nature and the efficient, clear-cut Dutch professional style.
What "Work-Life Balance" Actually Feels Like Working here taught me what true professional respect looks like. For the first time, I experienced:
Autonomy: Doing my job without the need for constant "favors" or corporate politics.
Flexibility: 25+ days of vacation and the trust to manage my own hours.
Real Recognition: Being valued for my skills (like advanced Excel and strategic communication) rather than just "putting in hours."
Looking Back from 2026, it wasn't always easy. Being the only one in the room who didn’t speak Dutch in those early days was exhausting. Speaking English all day takes energy. But that struggle was the foundation for the People Ops Specialist I am today.
Today, I don’t just work in the Netherlands; I help others bridge this same gap. If you’re feeling like a "foreigner" in your career today, remember: your background isn’t a barrier, it’s your greatest competitive advantage.
